Le vendredi 25 juin 2021, Lena Martina DUBOIS présentera l'examen en vue de l’obtention du grade académique de Docteur en Sciences (Collège de doctorat en Chimie) sous la direction de Jean-François FOCANT.

Cette épreuve consistera en la défense publique d’une dissertation intitulée :

« Methods and applications for forensic odor profiling ».

Résumé

The potential of comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) for forensic applications has already been demonstrated in different research domains; however, its use remains rather limited. Nevertheless, one emerging area with an increase of research interest is forensic volatolomics, where the aim is to detect, analyze and characterize volatiles, released by an object, a substance or a human being. In this context, ‘odor’ refers typically to the detection of a substance, and ‘scent’ is used to refer to volatiles emitted from a live human being. Chemically, such an odor or scent is a complex mixture of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be qualitatively and/or quantitatively determined using analytical instrumentation. Its complete characterization typically requires a powerful analytical technique. In the last decade, the exploration of GC×GC for VOC analysis has sparked interest in the forensic science research community. Investigating the potential, applicability and limitations of GC×GC-based methods to examine, characterize and monitor forensic-related odor profiles is the subject matter of this thesis.
