« Design of Functional and Responsive Polymers via Radical Polymerization of Non-Conjugated Methylene Lactone and Oxazolidinone ».

Abstract

Synthetic polymers sustain a wide range of applications today notably in biomedicine, environment and electronics, but the quest for further sophistication of polymers remains topical to improve their scope and performance. In this respect, the radical polymerization of methylene heterocyclic compounds (MHCs) is attractive and gives access to innovative functional polymers. However, examples of non-conjugated MHCs, which are ideal candidates for copolymerization with some industrially important non-conjugated monomers such as vinyl acetate, vinyl amides and ethylene, are scarce. Moreover, most MHCs are petroleum-based compounds and biomass-derived MHCs still need to be developed. The present thesis aims to address these gaps by developing the radical (co)polymerization of the non-conjugated g-methylene-g-butyrolactone (gMgBL) and of the CO2-sourced 4,4-dimethyl-5-methyleneoxazolidin-2-one (DMOx). It also explores their potential as building blocks for the preparation of functional copolymers including multi-stimuli responsive materials.
