Biography
His passion for amphibians conducted Mathieu Denoël to study animal biology at the University of Liège. He then completed a thesis on the diversity of courtship behavior of newts at the Laboratory of Ethology of ULiege. Being particularly interested by a remarkable polymorphism where newts can either metamorphose or retain gills at the adult stage (ie, paedomorphosis), he carried out a PhD thesis on this topic, in close collaboration with Université Claude Bernard in Lyon. Wanting to gain an overall understanding of the processes involved, he continued his work as a postdoctoral researcher with the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS) conducting part of his post-doctoral research in various institutions such as Murray State University and Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in the U.S. He then obtained a permanent position at the FNRS. He is now a Research Director at the FNRS and is leading the Laboratory of Ecology and Conservation of Amphibians of the FOCUS Research Unit and gives several lectures in the Department of Biology, Ecology and Evolution at ULiège. He also served as President of the European Herpetological Society (SEH).
His main research aims to determineg the costs and benefits of alternative developmental pathways in amphibians (paedomorphosis vs metamorphosis). His approach is multidisciplinary, especially in behavioural, trophic, dispersal and landscape ecology but also in integrating biogeography, morphology, and genomics. His research encompasses lab and fieldwork in a large range of environments across Europe, North America, and Asia. He is also expert in using video-tracking technologies in behavioural sciences. Particularly inquiry by biodiversity loss in natural amphibian populations, he embeds his research program in a biological conservation framework to explain adaptation and decline of native species in function of environmental disturbance and he considers not all only amphibians but also the whole freshwater communities they live with. In this perspective, he particularly focuses on the effects of climate change (drought) and the introduction of invasive alien species (teleost fish and amphibians).
